FEATURE: Kano is grime's original 'roll' model

East Ham’s favourite son has been the talk of the town, ever since he graced the masses with his genre-blurring debut ‘Home Sweet Home’ in 2005. With Mike Skinner’s endorsement, K-A was streets ahead of the competition; spearheading the grime generation’s invasion into the mainstream, with hits like ‘Brown Eyes’ and ‘Night Night’.

However, the path of the pioneer is seldom smooth. While the likes of Dizzee escaped from planet grime, with the aid of a Mercury Music prize and a kooky signature sound, Kano flew the flag for a scene that was yet to come of age. His musings on ‘Sometimes’ (‘Sometimes you see me in a daydream thinking can the underground go mainstream?’) gave a small indication of the difficult challenges that would lie ahead for the early stars in the hood.

Today, Kano is heralded as a grime visionary: his futuristic flow and streetwise philosophy introduced the media to ‘broke Britain’, his collaborations with the likes of The Streets, Gorillaz, Craig David, Vybz Kartel and Kate Nash broke new ground, while his work with producers DaVinChe and ‘hit maker du jour’ Fraser T Smith helped to reshape the British urban soundscape. Few can deny that Kano’s forward-thinking approach has laid the groundwork for the commercial success of the Chipmunks, Tinchy Stryders and N-Dubz currently topping charts and Twitter trends.

I sat down with the much-respected lyricist in a South West London PR suite for a catch up talk. His demeanour is that of a man at home, despite being far from his east end manor. With Adidas on feet and Blackberry in palm, he lounges, taking the day of press interviews all in his stride.

My iPod misses you, where’ve you been for the past couple of years?

Your iPod misses me? (Laughs) I’ve been in the studio. I put out ‘140 Grime Street’ within a couple years... you should’ve got that one.

Yeah, I got that one.

I’ve just been in the studio recording and I went on tour after ‘140 Grime Street’. I’ve been co-producing, co-writing for artists, and now it’s time for a new album.

Have you been working with anyone interesting of late?

Chase & Status with ‘Against All Odds’. We had the single off their album ‘More Than Alot’. In terms of co-producing and writing, N-Dubz and Tinchy.

You are from East London, a place that many recognise as the birthplace of grime. How do you feel about the new artists from your area and do they uphold the same values as the original grime artists?

Uphold the same values? I think they follow the blueprint of artists like myself, artists like Wiley, artists like Dizzee. There’s someone to look up to, you know, there’s someone that’s done it before them. They are definitely inspired by us and influenced by us. When we were coming up, we really didn’t have anyone to look to. People before us were either more UK hip hop, you know, like London Posse or Roots Manuva or they were UK garage, which was the music that we grew up to. Emcees like PSG, Creed… they were really for the raves. We were really the first ones to start what they ended up calling grime, and be artists making albums. So I think they still uphold the same values in the sense that you know they do what we do.

I don’t like to do what people expect me to do.”

On your song 'Sometimes', you ponder about whether the ‘underground could go mainstream?’ What do you make of the chart success currently being enjoyed by the likes of Chipmunk and Tinchy?

I think it’s cool man. I’m not really one to say anything’s ‘sold out’ or you gotta stay grime or you gotta make that type of music forever. I think as much as the scene needs a Chipmunk I think it also needs a Ghetts, it needs a JME, and it needs a Kano. I’m glad to see the scene grow from a genre and a specific sound and more into a culture. It’s all cool. They’re making the music that is for that type of commercial world really.

Tell me about the inspiration behind ‘Rock N Rolla’

The inspiration behind ‘Rock N Rolla’ was really just a vibe that me and Mikey had in the studio. The real inspiration was a track for the clubs. I track that I wanted to hear in the club. I feel like I never really had a club track that could be played across the board. I had like underground club tracks like ‘Ps & Qs’ and ‘Mic Check’ and things like that, but it was really to just make people move, sing along and put their hands in the air.

Some might argue that the sound of ‘Rock N Rolla’ is following the current trend of urban artists, using synths and auto-tune. Many see you as a leader. Is it difficult to lead at a time when many are chasing the formula to chart success?

Well... I’m not trying to follow a formula to chart or commercial success. I don’t really believe there is a formula. I just kinda follow my instincts and my vibe. I really believe that 100%. There aren’t really many tracks like mine that have had great chart success in the UK. It’s different to what Tinchy’s doing or what Chipmunk’s doing. A lot of those are more down tempo, ballads. But yeah, people do see me as a leader; I don’t really see myself as all those things. Sometimes it is hard to make music from the heart with a lot of pressures on you and I don’t like to have the pressures on me. I don’t like to do what people expect me to do or what people want me to do because I think you’ll be spreading yourself too thin.

The first thing I learnt and the most important thing I learnt through being a recording artist was you’re never gonna be able to please everyone. And the more you try to please everyone; you just never end up pleasing yourself. People are always gonna say “Nas should make another ‘Illmatic’ and Jay-Z should make a ‘Reasonable Doubt’... and ‘why’s he working with Rihanna?’ But you know what, I think Jay-Z should be allowed to do what he wants to do.

Are you interested in collaborating or working in any other genres in the near future?

Yeah, I’m a fan of other genres. I like working with other people I respect and think that we can make good music with. I’ve worked with Chase & Status - they’re a drum n bass act. I’ve worked with Hot Chip, I’m working with them now and they’re a great electronica band.

How do you feel new online platforms like Grime Daily, and digital technology like iTunes has changed the way that artists reach their audience?

I think it’s cool; it can be positive and negative. Sometimes I look at them when I’m on the Internet. I always look at all these sites and see what people are up to, so it’s great in that way. I think definitely if you're an up and coming artist and you’re not on any major TV shows and obviously you’re not gonna get that offer and you’ve not got your song on the radio and you’re not in the magazines, it’s a free way of getting promoted, so it’s a good thing. But I think there needs to be some quality control sometimes. Some of the things you see on there is not that great and then some things are good. But who’s to decide who gets heard and who doesn’t?

Is 'clashing' still a necessary part of being an emcee these days?

I think it’s something that an emcee has to be prepared for at some stage in their career. I wouldn’t say clashing today is as important as it was in grime. But when we were coming up it was an important thing. It got people recognised and heard and sometimes it weeds out the real and the fake. As people say, you come out of a clash a winner and it can boost you and do a lot for you. But I think it’s important not to become a clash emcee or a battle emcee. Look at someone like Eminem, that’s the way he came up, that’s what makes him real, that’s what makes him credible. He won all those battles and he’s turned that into being an artist. Look at Wiley; he’s had many clashes. I’ve clashed Wiley but it’s nothing I want to do right now. It was something that was part and parcel of the game back then and maybe it’s not so important now.

Do you Tweet and what do make of the whole social networking thing? Are people getting a bit too deep in it?

I think it’s cool. Artists can say whatever they want to say. But also understand that when they do that, how many people are gonna read it or gonna hear it or whatever. Twitter, it’s cool, people go on it because people love it. It’s a way for people to connect with their fans - that’s how people use it in music. It’s a way to document your day-to-day movements, just keep people up to date. I think you can use too much. If you let someone in too much you lose that mystique and that persona that artists have. You wouldn’t see Prince on Twitter (laughs). You'd be anxious to hear what he’s gonna come with. You wouldn’t see Dr Dre on it. You’ll be waiting for ‘Detox’ though... You’ll wanna learn what he’s been doing all this time, you don’t necessarily need to know day-to-day, even if it might be fantastic to hear what he’s done. I think sometimes the artists need that distance. I also think artists can get too worked up on what people say and what critics say about them. Then that affects them and that decides what they go and do in the studio. Sometimes you gotta be like “I don’t care what anyone says, this is what I’m doing...” and be you.

Don’t you think success is part of taking on board what critics say and improving on it?

Not really. Criticism comes with success, it comes with the territory, but I don’t think listening to what people tell you and you putting that in action is always part of being successful. I don’t think that necessarily makes successful people. I don’t think Jay-Z got to where he is by people criticising him, saying “you’re saying this too much... you’re talking about money too much... you’re talking about hoes an bitches too much... and you should make ‘Reasonable Doubt’ again.” I don’t think that got Jay-Z where he is.

Do you like UK funky?

I like it. I like to hear it in the clubs. For me it’s an uplifting style of music that I wanna hear when I’m raving. I don’t know every track but mostly the big vocal ones I know. I got a brother... he plays me all the new funky ones and all that. I like to hear ‘em.

Do you have any plans to feature or release a UK Funky track? Any plans to feature on a funky track?

Nah.

Who are your current 'Top 3 Selected' artists?

My top three selected? Including myself or not?

Your show at 02 was amazing! What is your favourite live performance to date and why?

That was one of ‘em because I just think that’s definitely gonna be a show that’s gonna stand the test of time. People are always gonna talk about that one. I was real happy with the turn out and just the fact that I could do a show in a place like that and give those tickets to real fans and bring out the people I brought out. It was mind blowing really. You wouldn’t have seen a line up like that. You probably won’t see a line up like that nowadays and you wouldn’t have seen one since like an Esikmo or a Sidewinder. You had me, you had Wiley, you had Skepta, you had Ghetto, you had JME come on we had Tinchy there as well... It was just a great event.

What do you think of companies like Urban Development that help east London youth build their skills in music production, vocal performance, DJing and music business?

That’s all very positive to me. When I was coming up there wasn’t really much help or there wasn’t opportunity to get involved with and schemes that were going to help me pursue my music career. So I think it’s great for up and coming artists... it can only be a positive thing.

What plans have you got for the future?

Album in the New Year and just shows and touring.

You got a name for the album yet?

Nah… I’m working on that.
